We love to receive letters from our patients about the quality care they have received. Just this week we received a letter of appreciation from a family member of a patient in Dresden, TN. The letter states how two of our employees, Sherry Cole, CNA and Tony Harrison, RN went above and beyond their job role to care for a patient. Five nurses from Cookeville Private Duty have volunteered their time to meet the needs of a 44-year~old man who must have 24-hour care and lost all his TennCare benefits Feb. 24 because he hadexhausted his disability coverage. David Scott suffers from multiple sclerosis and his mother, Lola, who has diabetes, is unable to care for her son.
Our team of volunteers checks its schedules, divides its personal time and makes sure David, who can onlylift his left hand, is cared for around the clock.
“I worked for David in 2006 and took care ofhim for two plus years before I went to Iraq,” said Larry McDonald, LPN, who returned to the U.S. last November and reapplied for work with CareAll. “The Scott family makes all the nurses feel like family andI treat them like family. Thirty percent of nursing isknowledge; 70 percent is heart. Volunteering is all partof nursing.”
Nicole Belknap, LPN, said she spent 21 hours withDavid one week in lateFebruary. “I don’t think it’s right what TennCare did to him,” she said. “It’s now hard on bothof them. It’s not right for them to struggle if we can help.”
LaDonna Elder, LPN,said she has known the Scott family for 14years. “Lola is having adifficult time with this,”she said. “My heart is just broken with this. We just take our time about staying with them.”“
It doesn’t bother me to stay 12 hours with them,”Alisa McBroom, LPN, said. “I feel like I am part of their family.”
“Helping them; that’s the only thing I can do,”Lecia Brady, LPN, said. “David is deserving of whatever we can do. That’s what I am in nursing for.”
“These are tremendous people,” Mrs. Scott said. “They all took such good care of David even when he was on TennCare. They have all been extremely supportive of us. I love them all.”
