Defending against the Flu

fluThe human body has an incredible immune protection system that is ready and waiting to attack any foreign intruders in body. The attacks happen to us each and every day from poor nutrition, stress, pollution, and fatigue, all a result of unhealthy lifestyles. One of the best ways to build your immune system is to protect yourself at the cellular level with proper nutrients that is food for immune cell production needed to keep your body protected from unwanted invaders getting inside your body.

1 –Stay away from Sugar and Processed Foods: Sugar decreases the function of your immune system, and as you likely know, a strong immune system is key to fighting off viruses and other illness. Be aware that sugar is present in foods you may not suspect, like ketchup and fruit juice.

2 – Rest, Rest, Rest: Just like it becomes harder for you to get your daily tasks done if you’re tired, if your body is overly fatigued it will be harder for it to fight the flu.

3 – Have Effective Tools to Address Stress: We all face some stress every day, but if stress becomes overwhelming then your body will be less able to fight off the flu and other illness. If you feel that stress is taking a toll on your health it is time to recharge your mind and body with a little TCL. Treat yourself to a mini vacation (2-3 days is a real healing retreat); reflexology session (stimulate nervous system; improve circulation, remove toxins from the body); full body massage (relax the muscles and relieve pain); get a facial (relaxation for the mind and body); Meditation; Music; Sauna; Bubble Bath; Nature; etc.

4 – Exercise: When you exercise, you increase your circulation and your blood flow throughout your body. Consider exercises like Tai Chi; Yoga; Rebounder(mini trampoline); Dancing and Walking are known as the immune system building exercise. The components of your immune system are also better circulated, which means your immune system has a better chance of finding an illness before it spreads.

5 – Take a good source of the alphabet vitamins ABCDE: Increase your intake of healthy organic vitamin sources, which is crucial for maintaining health. The alphabet vitamins are the body’s foundation in protecting the body’s cell, organs, and systems. The alphabet vitamins are the necessary food supplementation that feeds the body since most foods are deprived of vitamins and minerals.

6 – Wash Your Hands: Washing your hands will decrease your likelihood of spreading a virus to your nose, mouth or other people.

7 – Keep your distance from people who have symptoms and if you’re sick, do everyone else a favor and stay home.

tenncareAs many of you are aware, TennCare is in the process of making cuts to its rolls in Tennessee. When a current beneficiary is notified that their eligibility may be in jeopardy, they are asked to respond to a Request for Information or RFI.  If this step is not taken by the beneficiary they will automatically be cut from TennCare.  The state has recently issued a letter to TennCare Providers giving some information about patients who have been cut because they did not respond to the RFI. If you become aware of any patient who has lost their TennCare coverage and you believe it may be due to a failure to respond to the RFI you may direct them to call the Family Assistance Service Center toll free at 1-866-311-4287. In the Nashville area they may call, 743-2000.
If you know of someone who has been cut, or may potentially be cut please use the following as a reference.

I found a great article today from WebMD about the 15 things to ask you doctor when you are getting ready for a hospital admission.  The list is pretty basic but it is a great reminder tool before you check in.  Questions like “What do I need to do before Surgery” and “How can I lower the risk of medication errors?”  You can read the entire article and list of 15 questions by clicking here. Remember that when you are discharged, you can request which home care agency you want.  Tell your dischare planner that you would like CareAll Home Care to take care of you and get you back on your feet!

Tenncare officials are working toward removing 150,000 beneficiaries from their books.  Those who are up for possible cuts have at one time received Supplemental Security Income from Social Security and no longer receive those benefits.  The people that Tenncare wants to cut are disabled, or over 65, or blind.  CareAll has been fortunate enough to team up with Gordon Bonnyman of the Tennessee Justice Center to provide you more information about the nature of the cuts and how to protect yourself, family or a loved one who may be facing this potential loss of Tenncare.
